The Sony KV-36XBR400 36-inch HD-ready WEGA TV delivers sharp and colorful images whether broadcast through a digital set-top box, DVD player, digital cable, satellite connection, game console, or good old-fashioned VCR. The TV employs a Trinitron WEGA flat picture tube, which minimizes glare and distortion from outside light sources, giving users a wide viewing angle from which to watch TV. Dot crawl and blurred edges are also relegated to relic status due to the 3D digital comb filter. Other picture enhancements spring from the velocity scan modulation, which creates refined edges around the objects on the screen; the combination of Dynamic Focus and Dynamic Picture circuitry; and the Digital Reality Creation technology, which doubles the pixels on each scan line (vertical and horizontal) to create an image with four times the density.

Sports fans will delight in the Twin View Multi-Image Driver (MIDX), which broadcasts two programs simultaneously in side-by-side or picture-in-picture format. The technology also lets viewers zoom in on one of the pictures, and can broadcast signals from two different sources (e.g., 1080i, 480p, and 480i) at the same time. Movie aficionados will appreciate the 16:9 enhanced aspect ratio, which maximizes the picture resolution for widescreen sources, such as select DVDs. The TV also lets the viewer adjust the screen's color temperature based on the light sources in a room, giving users the best picture for direct sunlight, artificial lighting, or no lighting at all.

Other popular features include several custom picture modes (standard, vivid, pro, and movie) custom channel labeling, an 181-channel express tuning system, SpeedSurf rapid channel scanning, the selection of up to eight channels as favorites, a sleep timer, and a multilingual onscreen menu. Parents can rest easy with the ratings monitor provided by the V-chip parental control, while hearing-impaired folks will appreciate the closed captioning feature.

The TV broadcasts robust audio through the two 15-watt side speakers, and offers TruSurround surround sound, virtual surround, and an MTS stereo decoder with DBX noise reduction. Users can adjust the treble, bass, and balance of the audio output while shifting between mono, stereo, and surround modes, or even an alternate audio broadcast of the same program (when available). The device also offers the volume-stabilizing talents of Steady Sound, meaning viewers will catch a break when loud commercials appear.

The KV-36XBR400 includes a host of inputs and outputs for component connection, including two high-quality component video inputs (ideal for digital set-top boxes and DVD players), three S-video inputs (one front and two rear), four composite inputs (one front and three rear) for such devices as a game console or camcorder, a Control-S input/output, one audio output for connection to a stereo, one monitor output, and three RF connectors. As with most Sony TVs, this unit is also Energy Star compliant.
